It's All About The Shoes
A bit long, but some background is needed. You may, or may not have noticed, The Golden Glover Uniform, is all black. The DBacks provide the batting helmet, the polo shirt, and the fanny pack for ball storage, and The Golden Glover provides the glove, black pants and shoes. According to the orientation meeting, all neon shoe colors were prohibited, and the preferred shoe colors were black, blue, or white.
Soon afterwards, I noticed that with one exception (looking at you Bill), all of the other Golden Glovers wore either black or blue shoes, so I got the idea that in order to "stand out" I would wear white shoes. In that way, even if I didn't get camera time, or announcer mention, I could still easily pick myself out in the background during the following days television replay. (see, that's me, right there, with the white sneakers)! Vain? Yes absolutely, but after 66 years of life, I think that I'm allowed a bit of vanity. But now..... My plan has been foiled.
A few weeks ago, my boss Kerby sent out a group text requesting our shoe size. No explanation, just a request. Now you probably figured like I did, the DBacks wanted to standardize the look, so the team was providing standard shoes, right?..... Not quite. Turns out that DBacks Pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez, with a couple of other players BOUGHT US SHOES AS A GIFT! And, as you can imagine, when a millionaire baseball player buys you shoes, they're not going to be $10 Walmart specials.
Now, I'm not a "runner" so I typically don't buy myself expensive running shoes, I'm perfectly happy with my base Addidas/Fila/KSWISS sneakers that I buy at Costco or Sams Club, but these aren't that. You are probably aware that Michael Jordan has a line of high top basketball shoes called "Air Jordans", but what you may not know, is that he also has a line of low top shoes called SPIZIKE LOW SE. These are what he gave us! Now, I'm not so vain, that I would look up what a pair of these shoes cost ($165), so I just wanted to go on 3 different web sites ($165) just to see if the shoes were available ($165). They were available at all 3 sites. Just saying. :-)
Anyway, I'm not sure how the other GG's feel, but I love them! Thank you, Eduardo, we really appreciate it. Best thing of all, the predominant color of the shoe is a very very light grey, you might even almost call it..... white. :-)
